Wine Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Other fruit and vegetable juices, such as dandelion and elderberry are also occasionally used in winemaking, an art the goes back at least 12,000 years. The alcohol level in wine is typically 12-18% naturally unless fortified. Wine is first mentioned in the Bible when Noah became intoxicated after the Flood (Gen. 9:20-21). Wine was a common commodity in Hebrew life and was regularly included in summaries of agricultural products (Gen. 27:28; II Kings 18:32; Jer. 31:12). In the Bible wine is not necessarily fermented/alcoholic. It can refer to grape juice still in the grapes and to freshly pressed grape juice. The naturally fermented juice of grapes, fruits and berries (Non-grape wines state on their label the fruits or berries from which they are made.) Virtually every country in the world produces wines.
